No Choice

“Choice is an illusion, created between those with power, and those without”

— The Merovingian, The Matrix Reloaded

Concept and Inspiration:

This short animation is inspired by the philosophical notion expressed in The Matrix Reloaded, where the Merovingian states, “Choice is an illusion, created between those with power, and those without.” Drawing from this idea, the animation explores themes of power, the illusion of democracy, and systemic corruption, framed within an Animal Farm-inspired world. The narrative centers around the manipulation and exploitation inherent in hierarchical systems, using anthropomorphized animals to embody different societal roles.

Character Design and Development:

Technical Execution:

  • Modeling & Rigging: The character was created in Maya, where I developed the base mesh, detailed features, and rigging system to allow for full body and facial animation.

  • Facial Animation: Blendshapes were employed to enable nuanced expressions and lip-sync performance, giving the pig character a distinct personality and range of emotive reactions.

  • Animation: Maya was used to animate both body movement and subtle gestures, emphasizing character personality and narrative storytelling.

  • Pre-Production & Brainstorming: Canva served as a tool for ideation, mood boards, and preliminary sketches, helping to solidify visual style and thematic direction before 3D production.

The primary character I modelled and rigged is a gluttonous, corpulent pig dressed in a salesman’s suit, complete with a devious smirk. His design draws heavily from traditional Animal Farm concept art of pigs, emphasizing traits of greed, cunning, and dominance. The visual exaggeration of his physique and expressions reinforces the thematic critique of corruption and the hunger for power.

This project allowed me to explore the intersection of storytelling, design, and 3D animation, translating complex themes of power and corruption into a visually engaging and conceptually rich character-driven short. It strengthened my ability to combine artistic vision with technical execution, preparing me for future narrative-focused animation projects.
